Indian cinema’s newest Oscar contender, Homebound, received a star-studded reception in New York this weekend as iconic filmmaker Martin Scorsese personally hosted a special screening of the film. The event was followed by an insightful Q&A session with the film’s director, Neeraj Ghaywan.
The drama, which explores themes of friendship and life during the COVID-19 pandemic, is fresh off its Cannes premiere and its selection as India’s official entry for the Best International Film category at the Oscars.
Scorsese Puts Director at Ease
The screening and Q&A session were described as “a night to remember,” celebrating the film’s global success. Director Neeraj Ghaywan, visibly emotional, described the event as the “highest point” of his career.
Ghaywan revealed on social media how the cinematic master put him at ease ahead of their public discussion.
Neeraj Ghaywan (on X): “Mr. Scorsese saw I was nervous and narrated a funny anecdote about being mistaken for the Hillside Strangler just to calm me down. That’s the generous, selfless master that he is.”
Scorsese also posed for photos with the Homebound team, including lead actors Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, who play best friends Shoaib and Chandan.
Homebound on the Global Stage
Produced by Dharma Productions, Homebound is inspired by a Basharat Peer 2020 New York Times article. It focuses on the personal and societal challenges navigated by two friends during the national lockdown. The film was released in India on September 26.
The New York event drew support from other key figures in the industry, including South actor Siddharth and renowned filmmaker Mira Nair, who attended to boost the film’s Oscar campaign.
Ghaywan expressed deep gratitude for the experience, concluding, “I don’t know what the future holds for this film, but this moment right here, sitting across from Martin Scorsese, is the biggest award for me.”
