Canadian news outlet CTV News has projected that incumbent Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Liberal Party will remain in power after securing enough seats in the 45th federal election to form the next government. Carney took over leadership from Justin Trudeau, who resigned after losing support within his own party.
The election saw a competitive race featuring Liberal Leader Mark Carney, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, and Green Party co-Leader Jonathan Pedneault. It was widely regarded as one of the most unpredictable elections in Canadian political history.
According to CTV News, Canadians have now made their choice on who will govern and which leader will guide the country from Ottawa. This outcome marks a historic achievement for the Liberals, who are now set to retain power for a fourth consecutive term—an uncommon feat in Canadian politics.
The election took place amid heightened tensions between Canada and the United States, sparked by tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump repeatedly targeted Canada, mockingly referring to it as “the 51st state of the United States.”
An IPSOS poll conducted for Global News ahead of election day showed the Liberal Party holding a four-point lead.
This election was called earlier than expected when Prime Minister Carney dissolved Parliament in a bid to secure a fresh mandate. Framing the campaign around national resilience, Carney described the moment as “the most significant crisis of his lifetime, due to President Donald Trump’s trade actions and his threats to sovereignty.” He urged Canadians to support his vision of building “a new economy resilient to U.S. pressure.” Carney’s economic background as a former central banker and his decisive stance against Trump’s rhetoric earned him the highest approval ratings among the federal leaders—ultimately winning the confidence of voters.
Justin Trudeau’s tenure had been marred by strained relations with India, particularly after he publicly alleged that the Indian government was involved in the killing of NIA-designated terrorist Hardeep Nijjar.
In contrast, Mark Carney has signaled his intent to rebuild diplomatic ties with India. He notably offered condolences following the terror attack in Pahalgam, reflecting a shift in tone and policy direction.
