Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India]: Legendary actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, fondly known as “Bharat Kumar,” passed away on Friday morning at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He was 86.
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan paid tribute to the veteran icon with a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging Kumar’s immense contribution to Indian cinema and his dedication to patriotism through film.

Born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan), Manoj Kumar became a celebrated name in Indian cinema during the 1960s and 70s. He earned the nickname “Bharat Kumar” for his powerful portrayals in patriotic films such as Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, and Shaheed.
In addition to his acting career, Kumar made a lasting impact as a director and producer. His directorial debut Upkar (1967) earned the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film. He went on to direct critically acclaimed and commercially successful films like Purab Aur Paschim (1970) and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974).
His work was known for blending strong nationalistic themes with emotional storytelling, making him a beloved figure across generations.
Leaders from across the political spectrum also mourned his death and acknowledged his cultural legacy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi all issued statements paying tribute to the cinematic legend.
Prime Minister Modi described him as an “icon of Indian cinema” and lauded his unparalleled ability to evoke national pride through storytelling.
