New Delhi, December 28: Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit paid tribute to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday, remembering him as a dignified leader who worked tirelessly for the nation’s welfare.
“A good man, former Prime Minister, and economist has passed away. He dedicated his life to the country. Today, we gather to pay our last respects,” Dikshit told ANI at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters, where Singh’s mortal remains were brought for party leaders and workers to offer their final tributes.
Dikshit highlighted Singh’s unwavering dignity, saying, “He maintained his dignity throughout his life. He will be remembered for his significant achievements and dignified manner. As both Prime Minister and Finance Minister, he transformed the country’s economic landscape for the better.”
Singh’s wife, Gursharan Kaur, and daughter, Daman Singh, also paid their last respects at the AICC headquarters in Delhi. Several prominent leaders, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, attended the tribute ceremony.
Outside Singh’s Delhi residence, a large crowd gathered to honor the former leader. The Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory in anticipation of the funeral, detailing road restrictions and urging the public to avoid certain routes and use public transport to manage congestion.
Dr. Singh’s career spanned decades, during which he held key positions, including Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, where he led major economic reforms that reshaped India’s economy. As the 13th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, he guided the country through economic challenges and contributed significantly to India’s modernization. After retiring from public life following his second term, he left behind a legacy of growth and global recognition. Singh was succeeded by Narendra Modi in 2014 after the Congress-led UPA lost the general elections.
