Congress MP Manish Tewari Seeks Adjournment Motion In Lok Sabha Over Judiciary Concerns

New Delhi [India]: Congress MP Manish Tewari has submitted an Adjournment Motion in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, calling for the suspension of regular proceedings to discuss urgent concerns regarding alleged aberrations in the higher judiciary.

In his notice, Tewari underscored the national significance of the issue, emphasizing that India’s democracy stands on four key pillars—the executive, legislature, judiciary, and a free press. He noted that recent allegations regarding the judiciary have raised concerns among the legal community and citizens across the country.

“The recent reports of alleged aberrations in the judiciary have disturbed the legal fraternity and other citizens across the country. Parliament, being the supreme legislative body that exercises oversight on both the executive and even an independent judiciary, must rise to the occasion,” Tewari stated in his motion.

Call for Government Response

The Congress MP urged the government to issue a comprehensive statement on the House floor regarding the matter, as the allegations have led to questions about the integrity, impartiality, and fairness of the judicial system. He sought urgent permission from the Chair to raise the issue, stressing its importance in maintaining public trust in India’s judiciary.

Parliament Witnesses Heated Exchanges

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha sessions on Monday saw multiple adjournments, as treasury benches aggressively targeted the Congress over remarks made by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar regarding the Constitution.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Union Health Minister JP Nadda led the BJP’s attack, accusing Shivakumar of allegedly talking about “changing the Constitution”. In response, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh submitted a breach of privilege notice against Rijiju in the Rajya Sabha, escalating tensions between the two parties.
