New York [US]: Renowned Indian designer Manish Malhotra made his Met Gala debut in 2025, leaving a mark not only with his own striking appearance but also with custom couture pieces crafted for global celebrities. One of the standout moments of the evening came from socialite Natasha Poonawalla, who turned heads in a dramatic ensemble designed by Malhotra.
Natasha graced the red carpet in a sculpted gown described by the designer as “an exquisite fusion of armor, artistry, and ancestry.” The design showcased Gara embroidery, a rare and intricate Indian craft, and was highlighted by a peplum waist, sculptural collar, and pearl droplet detailing. She completed the look with a black Gara jacket featuring bold shoulders and an imperial purple lining, adding a regal contrast to the metallic sheen of the gown.
Malhotra’s own look also drew attention. He wore a striking black overcoat shrug embellished with gold embroidery, layered over a white bishop-sleeve shirt. The ensemble was paired with a finely pressed black tie accented by silver brooches with emerald-toned stones, and a golden elephant-face brooch, paying homage to Indian cultural heritage. Rugged combat shoes and a waxed hairstyle completed his edgy yet elegant appearance.
The 2025 Met Gala theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” celebrates the history and cultural significance of Black fashion, exploring its evolution from the 18th century to today. Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s groundbreaking 2009 book Slaves to Fashion, the exhibition—curated by Andrew Bolton—focuses on Black dandyism as a powerful expression of identity, resistance, and artistry.
Malhotra’s inclusion at this prestigious event underscores the global recognition of Indian craftsmanship and the growing dialogue between heritage and high fashion on the world stage.
