Imphal (Manipur) [India]: The vibrant Yaoshang Festival, a cherished cultural event in Manipur, has returned in full swing after a year-long pause caused by unrest since May 2023. The five-day celebration, which blends colours, culture, and tradition, has brought renewed hope and joy to the state.
Held annually during the full moon of the Lamta month in the Manipuri lunar calendar, Yaoshang is often referred to as the Holi of Manipur. The festival unites communities through cultural performances, spiritual rituals, and lively festivities.
From the rhythmic beats of Thabal Chongba to soulful kirtans, energetic sports events, and joyful splashes of colour, Yaoshang embodies love, devotion, and community spirit.
The Indian Army’s Assam Rifles also participated in the celebrations, posting:
“Assam Rifles joyously participated in the vibrant Yaoshang Festival in Manipur, embracing the spirit of brotherhood, culture and harmony with the local communities.”
The post highlighted how the festival’s cultural events and community gatherings strengthened bonds between security forces and the people.
Former Manipur Chief Minister and BJP leader N Biren Singh shared his thoughts on the festival’s significance. In a post on X, he wrote:
“The ‘Yaoshang Mei Thaba’ ceremony at my residence today was a beautiful reminder of the light that unites us. The flames symbolise the victory of good over evil, filling the air with hope and celebration.”
“Thankful to everyone who joined in, making the evening even more special. Wishing every home in Manipur a joyful, prosperous, and harmonious Yaoshang (Holi)!”
The festival begins with the construction of small thatch huts called “Yaoshang”, decorated with vibrant colours and serving as a focal point for the celebrations. On the evening of the first day, these huts are ceremoniously burned to symbolize the cleansing of past troubles and the arrival of new beginnings.
Throughout the festival, people participate in traditional Manipuri dances, performances, and playful water and colour fights reminiscent of Holi.
Sports competitions such as Yubi Lakpi (a traditional rugby-like game) and wrestling are also highlights, drawing large crowds and showcasing Manipur’s rich cultural heritage.
Yaoshang holds deep social and cultural significance, fostering unity, joy, and resilience. Despite past challenges, this year’s festival has become a powerful symbol of hope and community spirit in Manipur.
