Imphal (Manipur) [India]: In a significant development, district administrations of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur on Monday announced a relaxation in the prohibitory orders imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) as the overall law and order situation shows signs of improvement.
According to the official order issued by the District Magistrate of Imphal West:
“Movement of any person outside their respective residence is permitted from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM, provided no act or activity is carried out that could disturb the prevailing law and order in the scheduled area.”
However, movement is strictly prohibited from 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM to maintain public peace.
Additionally, the order prohibits:
- Gathering of five or more persons in any public area.
- Carrying sticks, stones, firearms, sharp weapons, or explosives.
The relaxations exclude government agencies engaged in law enforcement, emergency services, banking, and other essential operations, which remain unaffected by the curbs.
The move comes after a spate of protests erupted across Imphal on Sunday night demanding the release of Meitei outfit Arambai Tenggol member Kanan Singh and four others arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
As per the CBI, Kanan Singh was allegedly involved in serious criminal activities during the 2023 ethnic violence that rocked Manipur. His arrest, along with four associates, triggered widespread demonstrations in the five districts.
Security forces used tear gas shells to disperse the agitated protesters who blocked roads, set tyres on fire, and clashed with law enforcement personnel. Heavy deployment of security forces continues in sensitive zones to prevent further escalation.
The District Magistrates had initially imposed blanket prohibitory orders on Sunday to curb any potential unrest. With Monday’s relaxation, daytime movement and essential services have resumed with caution.
The situation remains under close watch as the state administration works to prevent fresh outbreaks of violence.
