Keisham Meghachandra Singh, President of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), has criticized the central government for its alleged inaction in resolving the prolonged crisis in Manipur.
Congress Delegation’s Efforts
Singh revealed that a memorandum was submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, urging him to either visit the violence-hit state or engage with its political leaders to address the ongoing turmoil.
“We submitted this letter on behalf of the people of the state. In this memorandum, we have requested PM Modi to visit Manipur at least once. This is the lone demand of the people of Manipur. This is the demand of all political parties in the violence-hit state, including the BJP,” Singh stated.
Denied Protest Permission at Jantar Mantar
Singh criticized the denial of permission for a sit-in protest planned by the Congress and INDIA bloc at Jantar Mantar.
“We were repeatedly denied ground permission for the sit-in protest. Despite this, our movement will not stop, and we will continue our protest in different forms over our demands,” Singh said.
Government’s Defense
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai countered the criticism, highlighting the government’s achievements in the northeast since 2014. He praised the initiatives under the Look East Policy, which emphasized peace, stability, and development in insurgency-prone areas.
“The Central Government has made successful efforts to establish peace and stability while enriching the dignity, culture, language, and music of the North-East,” Rai stated during a press conference in Delhi.
Recent Developments in Manipur
The ongoing crisis in Manipur, which began on May 3 last year, stems from clashes during a rally organized by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) opposing the Meitei community’s demand for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe category.
To ensure security, Assam Rifles recently conducted area domination and sanitization operations in the Jiribam district. Additionally, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has registered cases related to the violence in Jiribam and two other areas.
Political Disruptions in Parliament
The winter session of Parliament, which began on November 25, has faced repeated adjournments due to opposition demands for discussions on the Adani issue, Sambhal violence, and the Manipur situation. The session will run until December 20.
