Congress Criticizes ‘Inadequate Arrangements’; BJP Defends Government’s Efforts in Honoring the Late Leader
New Delhi, December 29: A political dispute has erupted between the Congress and the BJP over the cremation arrangements of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat. Congress MP Manickam Tagore criticized the Centre, alleging that the final rites were conducted at a congested and common location, which he claimed was unbefitting of a leader of Dr. Singh’s stature.
“It is deeply painful to see that the final journey of Dr. Manmohan Singh was held at such a common and congested location. When former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away, this government ensured a dignified space for his cremation and a subsequent memorial,” Tagore told media.
He further emphasized that foreign dignitaries and family members faced difficulties due to the inadequate space at the venue.
“A memorial can be built anywhere in the country, but we were asking for a place where the last rites could have been conducted with greater dignity,” he added.
Government Defends Arrangements
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi responded to the criticism, defending the government’s arrangements and accusing Congress of politicizing a solemn occasion.
“There is no doubt that Dr. Manmohan Singh was one of the most respected personalities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government ensured all arrangements were made for his final journey. It does not suit any party to stoop so low and engage in political mudslinging during a time of national mourning,” Joshi said.
Government’s Assurance on Memorial
After Friday’s Cabinet meeting, Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Dr. Singh’s family that the government would allocate space for a memorial. Shah clarified that while the process of forming a dedicated trust and allocating space is ongoing, the immediate formalities of the cremation had to proceed at Nigambodh Ghat.
“The government is fully committed to honoring Dr. Singh’s legacy. A memorial will be built in his honor following proper protocols and administrative processes,” Shah assured.
A Solemn Farewell with State Honors
Dr. Manmohan Singh was accorded a state funeral with full military honors at Nigambodh Ghat on Saturday. The ceremony was attended by political leaders across party lines, marking the passing of one of India’s most respected statesmen.
Dr. Singh, aged 92, passed away at AIIMS Delhi on Thursday night following a sudden loss of consciousness at home. Despite immediate medical intervention, he could not be revived.
A Lasting Legacy Amid Political Controversy
The heated exchanges between the Congress and BJP over the cremation arrangements and memorial plans highlight the growing political tensions surrounding the farewell to one of India’s most revered leaders.
While the political blame game continues, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy as a visionary economist, statesman, and Prime Minister remains untarnished, serving as a guiding light for future generations.
