Washington: The 2025 Sundance Film Festival will honor veteran filmmaker James Mangold with the Trailblazer Award and Wicked star Cynthia Erivo with the Visionary Award during a gala event at Utah’s Grand Hyatt Deer Valley on January 24, 2025.
Cynthia Erivo expressed immense gratitude for the Visionary Award, acknowledging Sundance’s role as a platform for bold voices and transformative narratives. She emphasized the importance of storytelling in her work and her commitment to championing diverse, powerful stories that connect and challenge audiences. “Sundance has always been a sanctuary for bold voices and transformative narratives,” she said, reflecting on the significance of the recognition.
James Mangold is being celebrated with the Trailblazer Award for his longstanding contributions to the cinema industry. His directorial debut Heavy won the Special Jury Prize for Directing at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival. Mangold shared his deep appreciation for the honor, recalling how Sundance has been integral to his journey, from developing Cop Land to mentoring emerging filmmakers.
Amanda Kelso, Acting CEO of the Sundance Institute, praised both Mangold and Erivo for their creativity and impact within the arts. She noted that Mangold’s career exemplifies bold and authentic storytelling, and his connection to Sundance has left a lasting impact. Erivo, known for her electrifying performances, continues to inspire both audiences and creators alike.
In addition to Mangold and Erivo, the evening will recognize Michelle Satter, Founding Senior Director of Artist Programs at the Sundance Institute. The Vanguard Awards will be presented to Sean Wang, writer and director of Didi, and Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, co-directors of Sugarcane, both of whom premiered their films at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
The 2025 Sundance Film Festival will be held from January 23 to February 2, 2025, in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah.
