Mamta Kulkarni, Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi Expelled From Kinnar Akhada

Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh) [India], January 31: Rishi Ajay Das, the founder of Kinnar Akhada, has expelled Mamta Kulkarni and Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi from the Akhada, citing serious concerns over their actions.

The expulsion follows the controversial appointment of Mamta Kulkarni, a former Bollywood actress with a controversial past, to the position of Mahamandaleshwar. Tripathi had allegedly appointed Kulkarni without the approval of Ajay Das, sparking significant outrage within the Akhada.

In a press release dated January 30, 2025, Rishi Ajay Das explained, “As the founder of Kinnar Akhada, I am relieving Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi from his position, effective immediately. His appointment was meant to promote religious activities and uplift the transgender community, but he has strayed from these duties.”

The controversy stems from an agreement Tripathi allegedly made with Juna Akhada in 2019, which Ajay Das claims was done without his consent. He also contended that the contract was legally invalid due to the lack of his approval and signature.

Ajay Das criticized the appointment of Mamta Kulkarni, citing her criminal past as a major concern. “By appointing someone with such a history to the position of Mahamandaleshwar, what kind of example are we setting for Sanatan Dharma? This is a matter of ethics,” he stated.

The decision to expel both Kulkarni and Tripathi has caused division within the spiritual community. Mahant Ravindra Puri, the President of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, voiced his support for Tripathi and Kulkarni, questioning the legitimacy of Ajay Das’s actions. “Who is Rishi Ajay Das to expel Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi?” Puri remarked, emphasizing that both Tripathi and Kulkarni would continue to hold their positions and participate in the upcoming Amrit Snan.

The controversy over Mamta Kulkarni’s appointment as Mahamandaleshwar began during the Maha Kumbh when Tripathi publicly announced the decision. Kulkarni, once a well-known Bollywood actress in the 1990s, had distanced herself from the film industry in the early 2000s before making her return to India. Her appointment to the prestigious religious position has now raised concerns.

Transgender Kathavachak Jagatguru Himangi Sakhi Maa had previously raised objections, questioning Kulkarni’s credibility due to her criminal past. “Mamta Kulkarni was appointed Mahamandaleshwar for publicity. Society is well aware of her past, including her involvement in drug-related cases. This warrants further investigation,” Himangi Sakhi remarked.
