West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee intensified her attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the upcoming state elections, claiming that people’s food choices could be restricted if the BJP comes to power.
‘Won’t Be Able to Eat Fish, Eggs’
Addressing a rally in Purulia, Mamata alleged that BJP-ruled states impose restrictions on food habits.
“If the BJP comes, you won’t be able to eat meat, fish, or eggs,” she said, framing the issue as one of personal freedom and cultural identity in Bengal.
Sharp Political Attacks
The TMC chief also accused the BJP of:
- Using communal tensions to gain power
- Failing to ensure safety of women and tribals in states it governs
- Allowing attacks on Bengali-speaking migrants in other parts of the country
She asserted that her government does not discriminate and stands for inclusivity.
Election Timeline
Polling in West Bengal will take place in two phases:
- April 23
- April 29
Votes will be counted on May 4, setting the stage for a high-stakes political contest between the TMC and BJP.
The remarks signal a heated campaign battle, with identity, culture, and governance emerging as key issues in the run-up to the elections.
