New Delhi, February 11: A Parliamentary delegation from Maldives, led by the Speaker of Maldives People’s Majlis, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, visited the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Tuesday to observe the ongoing proceedings of the Indian Parliament.
Both Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar warmly welcomed the delegation to the two Houses.
The Maldives delegation is also scheduled to tour the Parliament House complex. Following this, the delegation will hold bilateral talks with Om Birla, who will host a lunch in their honor.
Addressing the Lok Sabha, Om Birla extended a warm welcome to the delegation and highlighted the importance of the visit in strengthening the ties between the two nations. “I am pleased to announce that in the distinguished box of our house, the parliamentary delegation from the Republic of Maldives is present. On behalf of myself and all the members, I extend a warm welcome to them,” said Birla. He further noted that the visit is a symbol of deepening relations between India and Maldives, which will help further strengthen the trilateral partnership between the two countries.
In a post on X, Birla reiterated his welcome: “The Parliamentary delegation from the Republic of Maldives, led by Abdul Rahim Abdullah, Speaker of the People’s Majlis of the Republic of Maldives, who is on a visit to India, witnessed the proceedings of the Lok Sabha today. All members of the delegation are heartily welcome to the Parliament of India.”
The delegation’s visit comes amid ongoing efforts to foster stronger diplomatic and parliamentary ties between India and Maldives.
This visit follows similar interactions, such as the February 3 visit by a Russian parliamentary delegation, and the February 6 meeting with a Swedish delegation at the Parliament, further underscoring India’s commitment to strengthening international relations.
