Kochi (Kerala) [India]: Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko, who was arrested on Saturday following allegations of drug use and inappropriate behavior, has been released on bail after being taken to Kochi’s General Hospital for a medical examination, police officials confirmed.
The arrest stems from an incident where the actor allegedly fled a hotel room in Kochi during a police raid. Shine later appeared at the Ernakulam North Police Station accompanied by his legal team in response to a police notice seeking clarification on his attempt to evade the authorities.
Actor Faces Misconduct Allegations from Co-star Vincy Aloshious
The case has gained significant public attention following a formal complaint by actress Vincy Aloshious, who accused Shine of inappropriate behavior and substance abuse on the sets of their upcoming film Suthravakyam. Vincy filed her complaint with the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce and the film industry’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC).
In a widely circulated Instagram video, Vincy spoke out about her experiences, alleging Shine behaved unprofessionally and created an unsafe work environment, particularly while under the influence of drugs.
“Some days ago, at an anti-drug campaign, I made a statement that I would not work with people I know who use drugs,” she said. “I am doing this video to make my stand clear.”
She recounted specific incidents, including:
- The actor offering to help her with a wardrobe malfunction in front of the crew, which she called “inappropriate.”
- Observing Shine allegedly spitting a white powder onto a table during rehearsal, suggesting drug use on set.
Despite bringing the issue to the attention of the production team, Vincy said the shooting continued due to Shine’s lead role in the film.
Political Response and Growing Concern in the Film Industry
BJP leader Nivedita Subramanian criticized the Kerala government for its “silence” on the rising abuse of women in the state’s film industry.
“There have been many issues, such as the casting couch, but the ruling party remains silent and is blind to the atrocities happening to women,” Subramanian said.
She accused the government of enabling such behavior and called for greater accountability and protection for women in the entertainment sector.
Film Chamber Launches Review
The Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce has acknowledged receipt of Vincy’s complaint and is currently reviewing the matter. Meanwhile, the incident has sparked renewed debate over drug use, professionalism, and the safety of women in the Malayalam film industry.
