Mumbai Police confirm arrest after initial misidentifications; accused lodged at Khar Police Station
Mumbai, January 19: After a series of missed identifications, Mumbai Police have arrested the main accused in the attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. The suspect, detained in Thane, has confessed to the crime, officials announced on Sunday.
The accused, who reportedly worked as a waiter at a restaurant, was using multiple aliases, including Vijay Das, Bijoy Das, and Mohammed Iliyas, according to the police. He is currently in custody at Khar Police Station, and further details about the case will be shared at a briefing scheduled for 9 am today at the DCP Zone IX Office.
Multiple Detentions Before Arrest
The investigation saw two earlier detentions that proved to be misidentifications.
- First suspect: A man in Mumbai was detained for questioning but was later cleared of any involvement.
- Second suspect: Another individual, Aakash Kanojia, was apprehended by the Raipur Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Durg, Chhattisgarh, while traveling on the Jnaneswari Express. He was handed over to Mumbai Police but was also found to have no connection to the crime.
Saif Ali Khan’s Condition
The attack on Saif Ali Khan occurred in the early hours of Thursday at his Bandra apartment. The actor sustained multiple stab wounds, including serious injuries to his thoracic spine.
Following immediate medical attention at Lilavati Hospital, Saif underwent successful surgery to remove a 2.5-inch-long blade. Hospital officials have reported that the actor is recovering well, has been moved out of the ICU to a regular room, and remains under close observation.
