Balochistan [Pakistan], March 7: Mahrang Baloch, a leading human rights activist and organizer of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), has confirmed her nomination for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. The news, reported by the Balochistan Post, highlights her efforts to bring attention to the issue of enforced disappearances in Balochistan, a region marked by ongoing human rights concerns
While expressing deep gratitude for the nomination, Baloch emphasized that the recognition is not for her, but for the thousands of Baloch people who have been forcibly disappeared and their families who continue to demand justice. In a heartfelt post on X, she stated, “I am deeply honored by this nomination, but it is not about me. It is about the thousands of Baloch who have been forcibly disappeared and the families demanding justice. The fight for human rights in Balochistan must not be ignored by global civil society and civilized nations.”
The announcement of her nomination came from Norway-based Baloch journalist Kiyya Baloch, who revealed that Mahrang Baloch is one of 338 candidates for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, which includes 244 individuals and 94 organizations. While the Nobel Foundation typically keeps nominations confidential for 50 years, nominators can choose to disclose them, and Kiyya Baloch confirmed the nomination through reliable sources involved in the process.
Mahrang Baloch is internationally recognized for her activism, particularly her efforts to raise awareness of enforced disappearances and other human rights abuses in Balochistan. Through her leadership in marches, protests, and advocacy, she has successfully garnered global attention to the plight of the families of the disappeared.
Her efforts have earned her significant recognition, including a spot on BBC’s 100 Most Influential Women list and recognition by TIME magazine as one of the world’s top emerging leaders.
While her Nobel nomination is seen by some as a reflection of her tireless work, Mahrang Baloch insists that the true honor lies in using this platform to amplify the voices of those she represents, rather than focusing on her own recognition. She remains dedicated to the cause of justice for the people of Balochistan, ensuring that their struggle is heard on the global stage.
