The Indian animated film Mahavatar Narsimha has achieved a new milestone, becoming the highest-grossing animated film in India’s history. The mythological epic, which premiered on July 25, is on a record-breaking theatrical run and has already collected a staggering ₹210 crore worldwide, according to its makers.
The film has shattered previous records, surpassing the box office collections of popular international animated films like Disney’s The Lion King and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. It also out-grossed the earlier Indian animated hit, Hanuman (2005).
On Monday, Hombale Films, which presented the film, shared the latest worldwide box office figures on social media. “210 CRORES+ worldwide gross & counting…Mahavatar Narsimha continues the glorious run, shattering records and winning the love of millions worldwide,” the post read.
The film’s success is not limited to the global market. In India, it has maintained its momentum well into its third week, with its 3rd Sunday collection registering a massive ₹23 crore. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film’s total domestic collection after 18 days stands at ₹171.92 crore.
Co-founder of Hombale Films, Chaluve Gowda, commented on the film’s success, stating, “When we get this kind of a reception, it proves that Indian films have an audience. And even for Disney movies, the artists are all Indians. Yes, we had the resources. The technology was there, but someone just had to take that risk and prove that in India, Indian animation movies will also work.”
Directed by Ashwin Kumar and produced by Kleem Productions, Mahavatar Narsimha was released in 3D and 2D in Hindi and several South Indian languages. The film’s success has paved the way for a new Indian mythological franchise, with upcoming entries like Mahavatar Parshuram and Mahavatar Kalki already in the works.
