Pune (Maharashtra) [India], February 27: Maharashtra State Commission for Women President Rupali Chakankar condemned the recent rape incident at Pune’s Swargate bus depot and assured that strict action would be taken against the accused. Calling the incident “very unfortunate,” Chakankar emphasized the importance of timely action and swift justice for the victim.
The victim had promptly filed a complaint at the Swargate Police Station, which led to swift measures by the authorities. Chakankar stated that the accused is expected to be arrested within the next two to three days. She said, “The incident that took place at Swargate depot is very unfortunate. The victim registered a complaint at Swargate PS and quick action was taken by the police. The accused will be arrested in the next 2-3 days. However, after such incidents, we see candle marches, and the news that initially dominates the headlines gradually fades away.”
She further added that women should be educated in self-defense and remain vigilant at all times. “State Commission for Women has ordered that quick and strict action should be taken against him,” she noted.
Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar criticized the state BJP government for the declining law and order situation in Maharashtra. He said, “This incident is shameful for Maharashtra. Law and order have been shattered in the state. Such incidents are increasing, and people have lost faith in the police and home department. We demand that the Chief Minister address this issue.”
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when a 26-year-old woman was waiting for a bus to return home. The accused, identified as Dattatray Ramdas Gade, approached her, falsely claiming the bus to her destination was parked elsewhere and led her to a parked bus where the crime occurred. The Pune Police launched a manhunt for Gade, who is currently absconding. The police have assured that efforts are underway to trace and arrest him.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2), Smarthana Patil, confirmed the details of the incident and assured that the victim is stable. “We have identified the accused, and we are making all the efforts to nab him,” Patil said.
