After Kundmala Bridge Collapse, Maharashtra Imposes Restrictions On Popular Tourist Spots

Maharashtra’s scenic beauty during the monsoon draws countless tourists to its lush hills, waterfalls, and cool getaways. However, following the tragic collapse of the Kundmala bridge near Pune, which claimed four lives and injured several others, authorities have stepped up safety measures and imposed restrictions across multiple tourist hotspots in the state.

The collapse was attributed to heavy rainfall causing the Indrayani river to overflow, combined with overcrowding on the weak bridge. In response, the state has temporarily closed or restricted access to several popular locations to avoid further tragedies.

Among the places affected are:

  • Kaas Plateau
  • Lingamala Falls
  • Ekvira Devi Temple
  • Karla and Bhaje Caves
  • Bhaje Waterfall
  • Madhe Ghat Waterfalls
  • Devkund Waterfall in Bhira, Raigad
  • Forts including Lohgad, Visapur, Tikona, Rajgad, Ajinkyatara, and Torna
  • Tiger Point, Lion Point, Shivling Point
  • Pawana Dam and Secret Point
  • Tamhini Ghat

The restrictions in Lonavala and Maval taluka will remain in place until August 31, while Rajgad area sites will be off-limits until September 22. Areas in the Satara district are expected to remain restricted until August 19.

Sujata Saunik, Chief Secretary of the Government of Maharashtra, emphasized the need for strict safety measures, telling PTI:

“During the monsoon, tourists come to some places in large numbers. To prevent loss of life, security should be enhanced at places where there is danger and if necessary, tourist entry should be temporarily banned. If tourists do not follow instructions of the administration, appropriate action should be taken against them.”

What’s Banned During the Monsoon?

  • Entering fast-flowing streams
  • Swimming in dangerous waters
  • Standing under waterfalls or posing for photos near them
  • Sitting on cliff edges or steep terrains
  • Reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, and roadside parking
  • Playing loud music, using DJ setups, or disturbing others with car speakers

Authorities have urged tourists to follow safety guidelines strictly and cooperate with the administration to ensure a safe and enjoyable monsoon travel experience in the region.
