Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) [India]: The much-awaited Mahakumbh 2025 commenced today in Prayagraj, and it is projected to generate trade worth ₹2 lakh crore, as per the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT). The event, hailed as the world’s largest human gathering, is expected to attract approximately 400 million visitors, providing a significant boost to local trade, tourism, and employment.
Major Economic Contributions
The event’s economic impact spans multiple sectors, with accommodation and tourism emerging as the largest contributors. Local hotels, guesthouses, and temporary lodging arrangements are estimated to bring in ₹40,000 crore.
Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General of CAIT, stated, “Mahakumbh will witness large-scale economic and trade activities. An estimate suggests that with an average expenditure of ₹5,000 per person during religious travel, total spending will exceed ₹2 lakh crore. This includes hotels, food, religious items, healthcare, and other services.”
Sector-Wise Economic Impact:
- Accommodation and Tourism: ₹40,000 crore
- Food and Beverages: Packaged foods, water, and meals are expected to contribute ₹20,000 crore.
- Religious Items: Offerings such as oil, lamps, idols, and incense sticks will generate ₹20,000 crore.
- Transportation and Logistics: Local and interstate services, taxis, and freight will account for ₹10,000 crore.
- Tourism Services: Travel packages, tour guides, and related activities are estimated to add ₹10,000 crore.
- Healthcare: Temporary medical camps, Ayurvedic products, and medicines could generate ₹3,000 crore.
- Digital Services: E-ticketing, digital payments, Wi-Fi, and mobile charging stations may contribute ₹1,000 crore.
- Media and Entertainment: Advertising and promotional activities are projected to bring ₹10,000 crore.
