Maha Kumbh Stampede Claims 30 Lives In Prayagraj, CM Yogi Adityanath Postpones Delhi Visit

Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) [India]: At least 30 people lost their lives, and 60 others were injured in a tragic pre-dawn stampede on Wednesday at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, a senior police official confirmed.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Kumbh, Vaibhav Krishna, stated in a press conference that 25 bodies have been identified, while five remain unidentified.

“A total of 30 people have died unfortunately in the stampede that took place at the Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj. Twenty-five bodies have been identified, and the rest are yet to be identified,” he said.

Among the deceased, four are from Karnataka, one from Assam, and one from Gujarat, the DIG further confirmed.

Victims and Injuries

A total of 90 people were rushed to hospitals, and 36 are currently receiving treatment at a local medical college, officials reported.

In response to the tragic incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has postponed his scheduled Delhi visit for an election campaign to personally monitor the situation.

“Keeping in mind the convenience of the devotees, CM Yogi Adityanath has requested all Mahamadaleshwars, saints, and Akharas to take their holy dips with some delay. The Amrit Snan of the Akharas has been concluded safely,” the DIG stated.

How the Stampede Occurred

According to police reports, the stampede took place between 1 AM and 2 AM at Akhara Marg, when a huge crowd broke through the barricades in a rush to take a holy dip.

“Before Brahma Muhurta, between 1 AM to 2 AM, a huge crowd gathered on Akhara Marg. Due to the overwhelming rush, the barricades collapsed, and devotees were trampled in the chaos. About 90 people were taken to the hospital, but sadly, 30 lost their lives,” the DIG explained.

Condolences and Calls for Safety Compliance

Religious leaders and officials have expressed their condolences, urging devotees to follow safety instructions to prevent further tragedies.

Swami Chidanand Saraswati, President of Parmarth Niketan Ashram, termed the incident “unfortunate”, stressing the importance of adhering to administration guidelines for public safety.

“Whatever happened was very unfortunate. The administration’s orders and messages should have been followed. People are coming in large numbers and taking a holy dip. I express my condolences to those who lost their lives,” he said in an ANI interview.

Increased Security at Maha Kumbh

In light of the incident, security has been tightened at Triveni Sangam to ensure the smooth conduct of upcoming rituals. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further mishaps.

The Maha Kumbh 2025 continues with its major bathing dates, including:

  • February 3 – Basant Panchami
  • February 12 – Maghi Purnima
  • February 26 – Maha Shivaratri

Officials have urged devotees to remain patient and cooperate with security personnel for their safety.
