Madras High Court Directs CBFC to Issue U/A 16+ Certificate for Vijay’s

In a major relief for the makers of actor Vijay’s highly anticipated film Jana Nayagan, the Madras High Court on Friday directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to grant the film a U/A 16+ certificate, clearing the way for its theatrical release.

The film’s release had been stalled due to a controversy surrounding its censor certification, despite being scheduled for a Pongal release on January 9. Following legal proceedings, the High Court ordered the CBFC to complete the certification process and allow the film’s release.

Court Proceedings and Verdict

The matter was heard by Justice PT Asha, who reserved the order after arguments were presented earlier this week by counsel representing KVN Productions and the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) appearing for the CBFC. The verdict was pronounced on Friday, directing the censor board to issue the U/A 16+ certificate.

During the hearing, it was revealed that the complaint which led to the halt in certification was filed by a member of the CBFC examining committee. Notably, the objections raised by the member were not recorded at the time of the film’s screening. The ASG informed the court that the decision to pause the certification process was taken by the CBFC Chairperson, who, according to the board, has the authority to order a review even after an initial screening.

CBFC’s Stand

ASG ARL Sundaresan, representing the CBFC, submitted the complaint to the court and argued that the Chairperson’s intervention was within the framework of existing certification rules. However, the court’s directive has now brought the prolonged uncertainty to an end.

High Stakes for Makers

The producers had earlier told the court that nearly ₹500 crore was at stake, citing extensive domestic and overseas bookings. Despite the absence of a censor certificate, advance ticket sales reportedly saw prices going up to ₹2000 in regions such as Karnataka, Kerala, and international markets.

About

Jana Nayagan

Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan stars Vijay, Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, and Bobby Deol in key roles. The film has been widely promoted as Vijay’s final film before he formally enters electoral politics ahead of the Tamil Nadu elections this year under his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

With the High Court’s order in place, the makers are now expected to move swiftly to finalize release plans.
