Madras HC Orders Gautham Vasudev Menon to Refund ₹4.25 Crore to Financier

The Madras High Court has directed filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon and his production house to repay ₹4.25 crore, along with 12% interest, to RS Infotainment over an unmade film project dating back to 2008.

The dispute arose from an agreement for a proposed Tamil film (Production No.6), where the financier had committed ₹13.5 crore. However, the project never materialised despite partial funding being disbursed.

Menon’s side argued that the financier failed to release the full amount, forcing the project to be shelved, and claimed the funds were used for production work. They also stated that the project was later adapted into another film.

Rejecting these claims, the court observed that no concrete evidence was provided to prove that the film had actually commenced. It also dismissed the argument that a later film fulfilled the original contractual obligation.

The bench upheld an earlier ruling, stating there was no error in the judgment and emphasised that attempts were made to avoid liability. The court’s decision reinforces accountability in film financing disputes.
