A late evening downpour on Wednesday delivered the heaviest single-day rainfall to Lucknow since 2017. The city recorded an average of 84.7 mm of rain, which is a staggering 433% above the normal daily average of 15.9 mm. In some areas, from Kanpur Road to Sitapur Road, Faizabad Road, and Sultanpur Road, the rainfall reached 117.6 mm. The last time the city saw heavier rainfall in a single day was in August 2017, when 161.8 mm was recorded.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this spell was caused by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which has kept monsoon activity active in the state for several weeks. The department had issued a 48-hour warning on Wednesday morning.
However, the rain is expected to subside soon. Mohammad Danish, a senior scientist at the Lucknow meteorological department, stated that monsoon activity is likely to decrease from Friday as the trough line shifts southward. Over the next five days, the city’s sky is expected to be partly cloudy, with only a “feeble chance of very light rain or drizzle.”
The city has now recorded a total of 499.1 mm of rainfall between June 1 and August 14, which is over 19% higher than the normal 417.9 mm for the same period.
