Lok Sabha Holds Special Discussion On Shubhanshu Shukla’s ISS Mission Amid Political Uproar

NEW DELHI – The Lok Sabha held a special discussion about Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s historic mission to the International Space Station (ISS) on Monday. Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh talked about how important the mission was for India’s space goals. The talk, “India’s First Astronaut Aboard The ISS – Critical Role of Space Programme For Viksit Bharat by 2047,” was meant to celebrate a national success and show how India’s space program is becoming more important.

The three-hour discussion, on the other hand, was stopped many times by the protesting Opposition. Members of Parliament loudly protested the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral rolls and claimed that there were problems with the elections, which caused a commotion that stopped the proceedings.

Minister Jitendra Singh and a few others, including Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, talked about how important Shukla’s mission was, even though there were problems. Tharoor wrote on X that he was disappointed that the Opposition didn’t show up for the special session. He said, “Let me say how proud all Indians are of the recent mission of Commander Shubhanshu Shukla to the International Space Station (ISS).” He also said that the mission was a very important milestone for India’s own human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan.

A mission that doesn’t cost much and has effects around the world

Minister Jitendra Singh talked on how important the Axiom-4 mission was to the country’s strategy in his speech. He said that the mission only cost ₹548 crore, which is a “very small amount” compared to operations like it by other countries. He said that this was possible because India could replace money problems with “intellectual and cerebral resources.”

Shukla did an important six-part research program while he was aboard the ISS for 18 days. This included two studies in life sciences and experiments on growing seeds and examining cyanobacteria in zero gravity. Singh made it clear that the tools used for the investigations were made in India. He remarked, “An Indian did the study, but the whole world will benefit from it, realizing India’s ‘Vishwa Bandhu’ (friend of the world) approach.”

Singh also linked Shukla’s feat to India’s overall progress in space science, mentioning prior successes like the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which made India the first country to land on the Moon’s southern pole. He also talked about how space technology is now a part of everyday life, from healthcare and crisis management to planning infrastructure through programs like PM Gati Shakti.

Political protests and the government’s response

The political ruckus went on during the whole session. Minister Singh added in a strong rebuke to the protesting Opposition MPs, “You seem to be upset by land, sky, and now space.” The opposition is acting this way now because they are angry with themselves for failing in every scheme. He said, “Right now, I am in space; these posters won’t reach there,” as a dig at the MPs who were holding up signs. He ended with a verse from the Urdu poet Ahmad Faraz, telling them to put their anger aside and join the celebration for Shubhanshu Shukla’s sake.

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. This encounter made his achievement much more important to the country. The government has made it plain that it sees the mission as more than just a scientific achievement; it also sees it as a sign of the “New India” and its goals around the world.
