LPG Tanker Crew Released After Drone Attack And Detention In Yemen

Islamabad: A liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker carrying 27 crew members, including 24 Pakistanis, was attacked by an Israeli drone and subsequently detained by Houthi forces in Yemen earlier this month, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed on Saturday.

The attack occurred on September 17 while the vessel was docked at Ras Issa port in Yemen. An LPG tank aboard the ship exploded following the drone strike, but the crew successfully extinguished the fire. Shortly after, the tanker was stopped by Houthi boats, and the crew were held hostage on board.

“The tanker and its crew have now been released by the Houthis and are out of Yemeni waters,” Naqvi said in a statement on X.

The crew included two Sri Lankans and a Nepali citizen, with the captain being Pakistani.

The attack comes amid heightened regional tensions, as Israel has repeatedly targeted Houthi positions during the ongoing Gaza conflict, while the Iran-backed rebels launch missiles and drones at Israel in solidarity with the Palestinians.
