Gorakhpur: A 20-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her former partner in a horrific late-night attack after she married someone else earlier this year, the police said on Tuesday. The incident took place on November 23 in Jungle Rasoolpur village, when the victim, Shivani, had returned to her maternal home to attend her cousin’s wedding.
Shivani, who tied the knot in May, was found dead in the bathroom of her maternal residence. Police officials said her body bore deep cuts on the neck, and evidence at the crime scene suggested a violent struggle.
“Shivani’s body had deep cuts on her neck and signs of a struggle,” said SP North Gyanendra Prasad, confirming the brutal nature of the crime.
Wedding Video Becomes Key Evidence
During the investigation, officers examined a video recording from the wedding ceremony. In the footage, the accused Vinay Nishad alias Deepak was seen standing unusually close to Shivani during the Jaimala ritual. Moments later, both disappeared from the frame, raising immediate suspicion.
Dog Squad Leads Police to Accused
Vinay, who lives merely 500 meters from Shivani’s house, was arrested after a police dog squad repeatedly traced the scent trail back to his residence. Further, the victim’s call records revealed that the two had spoken late into the night.
Upon searching the premises, police recovered the sickle used in the murder.
Accused Confesses to the Crime
During interrogation, Vinay reportedly confessed, telling investigators that he wanted to “finally get rid of her.” He claimed that he had spoken to Shivani for hours before allegedly slitting her throat around 2 am.
Police officials have said that further investigation is underway, including verification of the sequence of events and any additional involvement.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the village, with residents deeply disturbed by the brutality of the crime and the betrayal of trust involved in the attack.
