Paris [France], June 2: Italian tennis star Lorenzo Musetti earned the biggest Grand Slam victory of his career by defeating world No. 10 Holger Rune in the fourth round of the French Open 2025. Musetti won the match 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, claiming his first-ever Grand Slam top-10 win and booking a spot in the Roland Garros quarterfinals.
Musetti, who had never beaten Rune in previous encounters, showed resilience and tactical brilliance in the match that lasted three hours and 18 minutes. He now moves on to face Frances Tiafoe in the next round.
“It’s a special win for me, not just because of who I beat, but how I played under pressure,” Musetti said after the match.
Tiafoe Makes French Open History
In another milestone, Frances Tiafoe became the first American man since Andre Agassi (1995) to reach the French Open quarterfinals without losing a set. He defeated unseeded German Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4) to secure his place in the last eight.
Tiafoe’s run, along with fellow American Tommy Paul, marks the first time since 1996 that two American men have reached the quarterfinals in Paris.
Alcaraz Records 100th Win, Marches into Quarterfinals
Carlos Alcaraz also advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Ben Shelton in a high-octane fourth-round clash. The Spaniard prevailed 7-6(8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in a match lasting three hours and 19 minutes, marking his 100th tour-level win.
“I was fighting with myself at times,” said Alcaraz. “But I managed to calm my mind and keep going, which made the difference.”
Alcaraz, who is the defending champion, will now face Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals. A title defense would make him only the third player this century, after Rafael Nadal and Gustavo Kuerten, to successfully defend a French Open title.
