Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie Receives Mixed Reviews From Audiences; Rajinikanth’s Performance Praised, Aamir Khan’s Cameo Disappoints

Chennai: Lokesh Kanagaraj’s highly anticipated action drama Coolie, starring a star-studded cast led by Rajinikanth, was released in theaters on August 14. Early reviews on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) indicate a divided response from the audience, with the film seemingly catering primarily to fans of the superstar.

A Good Watch for Rajinikanth Fans

Many of Rajinikanth’s loyal fans were thrilled with the film, praising his “vintage style, action, and strong screen presence.” One user called the movie “insane,” highlighting its intriguing plot, constant shifts in gear, and frequent twists. Another fan felt that director Lokesh Kanagaraj had “cooked full meals” for Rajinikanth fans, extracting the best from the actor and delivering a “FULL BLAST RAJINI PADAM.” The de-aging technology used for the actor in a flashback sequence was also singled out for praise.

Several viewers were impressed by the performances of the supporting cast. Nagarjuna, who plays the antagonist Simon, received acclaim for his “menace wrapped in class” and a performance that will be “remembered for years.” However, some disagreed, with one user feeling that Nagarjuna was “weakest character” and not used properly. The performance of actor Soubin Shahir was also a point of contention, with some calling it a “standout performance” and others deeming it “okish.”

A Flawed Experience for Others

Not all viewers were as impressed, with some criticizing the film for its “mediocre script” and predictable climax. One X user called Lokesh Kanagaraj an “overrated director” and described the film as a “mess,” claiming he tried to replicate the success of his film Jailer but “couldn’t get not even one well staged sequence.” Another fan admitted that while they enjoyed the movie as a Rajinikanth fan, it did not live up to their expectations and was a “mix of high & flat scenes.”

A major point of disappointment for many was the much-hyped cameo by Aamir Khan. One user called his appearance “pointless,” while another wrote that it was “wasted potential” despite the actor’s stylish look.

In summary, the initial reception for Coolie is a mix of strong praise for Rajinikanth’s screen presence and criticism for a weak script and disappointing execution of certain elements, including a key cameo. While many fans have called it a “blockbuster,” others feel it is a “below average” watch, suggesting audiences should go in with low expectations.
