Producer Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films finally unveiled the long-awaited sequel to the highest-grossing Malayalam film, Lokah Chapter 1 – Chandra, on Saturday. The sequel, called Lokah Chapter 2, will star Tovino Thomas as Michael/Chathan, a goblin-like character that fans love.
The news came in the form of a unique two-minute, 55-second marketing film that shows a fun chat between Tovino’s Michael and Dulquer Salmaan’s mysterious shapeshifter/odiyan, Charlie. This confirms that the magical movie universe will continue.
The Chathan and the Odiyan Get Together
The film starts with Michael and Charlie catching up over a drink of toddy at a “safehouse.” Michael complains to Charlie for not calling him “at least once in 50 or 100 years,” which is a typical Chathan prank.
Michael instantly makes the conversation funny by saying, “This toddy is a basic treat for us chathans.” Not just for myself, but also for my 389 brothers, who are all heavy drinkers.
By presenting Charlie the book They Live Among Us, Michael affirms the main point of the growing Lokah cosmos. He says that the first chapter was about “Kalliyankattu Neeli, my girl,” which is the name of the character that Kalyani Priyadarshan played in Chapter 1. It’s apparent what this means: Michael will be the main character in the second chapter.
A New Bad Guy and a Shared Past
The enjoyable talk quickly turns to the peril that will drive the plot of the sequel. Michael says that his brother has been “released” and is now brutally going after him and the mystery guardian figure, Moothon (Mammootty voiced him in the first movie). Charlie calls the new threat “crazy.”
The Chathan tells the shapeshifter, “Bro, aren’t we all a family?” when he doesn’t want to become involved in Michael’s “family problems.” Michael’s last words to Charlie as he gets ready to leave are, “I know you’ll come.” If you don’t, the chathans will bring you—this suggests a long, possibly forced relationship between the two supernatural beings.
Dominic Arun, who directed the previous film, will also direct Lokah Chapter 2. Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films will make the movie.
The first movie, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, was a huge hit and became the Malayalam film that made the most money. It showed people the world of Kerala’s folklore, with Kalyani Priyadarshan playing the role of Yakshi Neeli/Chandra. Michael and Charlie were only in the first segment for a short time, but their big parts in this current announcement mean that the Lokah brand is getting a lot bigger.
