Star footballer Lionel Messi officially began his highly anticipated ‘GOAT Tour India 2025’ on Saturday in Kolkata. The Argentine legend, who arrived in the ‘City of Joy’ to an overwhelming reception from enthusiastic fans, marked his first major engagement by virtually unveiling a towering 70-foot statue erected in his honor.
A Monumental Tribute in Lake Town
The colossal iron statue, installed by the Sree Bhumi Sporting Club in Lake Town, Kolkata, depicts Messi proudly holding the FIFA World Cup trophy. Crowds of devoted supporters gathered at the site to witness the moment as the football icon performed the virtual unveiling.
West Bengal Minister and Sree Bhumi Sporting Club President Sujit Bose confirmed that the massive structure was completed in a remarkable 40 days. Bose emphasized the statue’s significance, stating it is the largest Messi statue in the world, and asserted that the Argentine star and his team had been consulted and were pleased with the tribute. “He gave his consent for the statue, and they are also happy,” the Minister said.
Fan Frenzy and a Long-Awaited Return
Messi’s arrival early Saturday morning was met with huge crowds across key locations in Kolkata, underscoring the immense popularity he commands in the region, particularly in West Bengal.
This visit marks the global icon’s first trip to India in 14 years. His previous visit was in 2011, when he played a friendly match at the Salt Lake Stadium, where Argentina defeated Venezuela 1-0. His return for the ‘GOAT Tour India 2025’ has sparked immense excitement among football fans ready for a grand celebration.
