New Delhi [India], April 4: The Indian film industry and the nation are mourning the loss of legendary actor, director, and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who passed away at the age of 87 on April 4, 2025. Known fondly as “Bharat Kumar” for his portrayals in patriotic films, Kumar breathed his last at 4:03 am at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. His son, Kunal Goswami, confirmed that his last rites will take place on April 5, 2025, at 11 am at Pawan Hans in Vile Parle.
Manoj Kumar’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the country. Political leaders, film industry veterans, and fans alike have expressed their condolences, honoring the actor’s significant contribution to Indian cinema.
President Droupadi Murmu took to social media to pay tribute to the actor, writing, “His cinema will instill national pride and inspire generations to come.” She lauded his ability to promote patriotism and Indian values through his work, particularly his unforgettable portrayals of national heroes, soldiers, and farmers.
BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut shared her condolences, saying, “The veteran actor was also known as Bharat Kumar. He raised the sentiment of patriotism among the countrymen. The film industry is saddened by the demise of such an artist and prays that his soul rests in peace.”
Leaders across the political spectrum also expressed their grief. Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh wrote, “Shri Manoj Kumar ji was a versatile actor, who will always be remembered for making films full of patriotism. Popularly known as ‘Bharat Kumar,’ his unforgettable performances in films like ‘Upkaar,’ ‘Purab Aur Paschim’ have enriched our culture and endeared him to people across generations. His cinematic legacy will live on through his works.”
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami posted, “Received the sad news of the demise of renowned Indian actor and film director, Padma Shri and Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner Shri Manoj Kumar ji. His demise is an irreparable loss for the film industry and cinema lovers.”
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma also expressed his sorrow, calling it “an irreparable loss to the film industry” and extended condolences to Kumar’s family. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal remembered the actor’s “amazing acting and patriotism,” and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi acknowledged Kumar’s contribution to both entertainment and social messages through his films.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sadness, calling Manoj Kumar “an icon of Indian cinema” whose films “ignited a sense of national pride” and would continue to inspire generations.
Manoj Kumar’s cousin, Manish R Goswami, described him as “a true countryman,” emphasizing the actor’s consistent focus on India’s national values through his films.
Kumar’s death, attributed to cardiogenic shock following an acute myocardial infarction and decompensated liver cirrhosis, comes after a period of medical care that began in February 2025.
A celebrated figure known for films like Upkaar, Purab Aur Paschim, and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Kumar’s cinematic legacy transcends time.
