Left Parties Unite For Delhi Assembly Polls With Slogan ‘BJP Hatao, Delhi Bachao’

New Delhi [India], January 9: In a display of left-wing unity for the 2025 Delhi assembly elections, communist parties have joined forces, with plans to contest six assembly constituencies. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) will field candidates in Karawal Nagar and Badarpur.

Brinda Karat, a senior CPI(M) leader, addressed the media, issuing the slogan, “BJP hatao, Delhi bachao” (defeat BJP, save Delhi). She emphasized that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was undermining the rights of Delhi’s residents and that it was crucial to halt their progress.

Karat further explained that three left parties—CPI(M), CPI, and CPI (Marxist-Leninist)—will contest two seats each, while also extending support to candidates in constituencies where they are not contesting. She criticized the BJP for depriving the Delhi government of its autonomy, a right upheld by the Supreme Court, calling it essential to defeat the BJP in Delhi.

“Our primary goal is to defeat the BJP, which is the most dangerous force. They must be stopped, as they are undermining the rights of the people and the autonomy of the Delhi government,” Karat said.

Meanwhile, AAP MP Sanjay Singh reiterated his party’s stance, claiming that AAP is the “only party in Delhi that can defeat BJP,” citing growing support from the INDIA bloc, including the Trinamool Congress and the Samajwadi Party. Although Congress and AAP are both part of the INDIA alliance, they are competing against each other in the upcoming election.

The Delhi assembly elections are scheduled for February 5, with the vote counting on February 8. The deadline for filing nominations is January 17, and scrutiny of nominations will take place on January 18. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is January 20.

In the 2020 Delhi elections, the Aam Aadmi Party dominated, securing 62 out of 70 seats, while the BJP won only eight seats. The Congress, which had ruled Delhi for 15 years, failed to win any seats in the last two elections.
