Los Angeles, April 15: Emmy-winning actor Laura Linney is set to star in the upcoming comedy series American Classic, joining a cast that includes Academy Award-winner Kevin Kline and actor Joe Tenney, according to Variety. The series is scheduled to begin production this summer in New Jersey.
The story follows Richard Bean (played by Kline), a once-celebrated Broadway star and unapologetic narcissist, who suffers a dramatic public meltdown. In a bid to reclaim his former glory, Richard returns to his hometown and the family-run Millersburg Festival Theater—where his journey into showbiz first began.
However, he finds the theatre in disarray, now operated by his brother Jon (Tenney) and sister-in-law Kristen (Linney) as a struggling dinner theater known more for its roast beef and murder mysteries than for serious art. Determined to restore its reputation and his own, Richard sets out to direct and star in what he dubs a “great American classic.”
Linney plays Kristen Forrest Bean, a woman with deep roots in the Millersburg Festival Theater. Once in love with Richard, Kristen followed him to New York at 19 in pursuit of a theatrical career. While Richard’s ambition catapulted him to success, Kristen’s quiet determination went unrecognized, prompting her return to Millersburg. She later married Richard’s younger brother, Jon, and built a life there, eventually becoming the town’s mayor. In her new role, Kristen dedicates her energy to reviving the theater and serving her community.
American Classic blends family drama with humor and showbiz satire, promising a rich mix of emotion, wit, and theatrical flair. The series marks a reunion of celebrated talents and is expected to appeal to fans of character-driven comedy.
