Landslide Halts Traffic On Jammu-Srinagar Highway Amid Severe Weather Conditions

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India]: Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been temporarily halted following a landslide in the Mehad area of Ramban. Authorities are currently working to clear the debris, and drivers have been advised to take alternative routes until the situation is resolved.

The region is grappling with severe weather conditions, as the Banihal mountains are covered in fresh snow following yesterday’s snowfall. The minimum temperature in the area was recorded at 3°C, with a maximum expected to reach 15°C.


Weather Update: Bhaderwah and Srinagar

  • Bhaderwah: Witnessing rainfall with low-hanging clouds creating a picturesque scene against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains.
  • Srinagar: Enduring the ongoing winter chill, with temperatures continuing to remain low.

CHVS Reddy, a tourist from Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, expressed awe at the cold weather:
“We are unable to stand because of the cold. We will never forget this place and send our people and family again and again. People here in Kashmir are very friendly and nice. Next time, we are going to plan with our families,” he said.


Bhimber Gali Tunnel Project: Boost to Connectivity

Meanwhile, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on Monday conducted the inaugural blast for the construction of the 1.1-kilometer-long Bhimber Gali Tunnel on National Highway 144A. The ceremony was led by Brig Neeraj Madan, Chief Engineer of Project Sampark.

According to a BRO statement:
“The inaugural blast for the 1.1 km Bhimber Gali Tunnel on NH-144A was conducted today by Brig Neeraj Madan, CE Project Sampark. This key BRO project will cut 10.8 km from the highway, boosting connectivity between Rajouri and Poonch for civilians and the Army.”


Sonamarg Tunnel Inaugurated by PM Modi

In a significant boost to connectivity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Sonamarg Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir. This tunnel is expected to greatly benefit the regions of Sonamarg, Kargil, and Leh by improving access and boosting tourism.

PM Modi emphasized the government’s commitment despite the challenges:
“Despite the challenges, our resolve did not waver,” he said, lauding the labourers for their determination and hard work. He also expressed condolences for the demise of seven labourers during the project.

PM Modi highlighted that the construction of the Sonamarg Tunnel began in 2015 after his government took office and was successfully completed under their administration. The tunnel addresses a long-standing demand of the people of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.
