The Delhi police have detained Samir Modi, the brother of fugitive businessman Lalit Modi, at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The arrest was made when a lady filed a complaint five days ago, saying that the person had raped her and threatened her with violence.
A high-ranking police officer said that a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against Samir Modi because of the woman’s accusation. His arrest brings the son of the well-known KK Modi Group back into the public eye.
Who is this Samir Modi?
Samir Modi is the younger son of Bina Modi and the late KK Modi. He is the executive director of Modi Enterprises, a company that his grandfather Gujarmal Modi started in 1933. He is also the managing director and creator of Modicare, a company that sells directly to customers.
He used to be the executive director of Godfrey Phillips India Ltd, a big tobacco company, but he was kicked off the board in 2024 because of how he acted during and after board meetings.
There has been a fight over an inheritance in the Modi family since 2014, and it got worse after KK Modi died in 2019. The disagreement is about how to divide up a ₹11,000 crore bequest, which includes a share of almost 50% in Godfrey Phillips. Samir Modi said last year that his mother and others planned an attack on him when he tried to get into a board meeting. He said that the event had “grievously hurt” him.
Samir Modi started working for the family business when he was 19 years old. He worked for the tobacco industry. He has also helped the group grow into other markets, such the 24Seven convenience stores and the Colorbar cosmetics brand.
