WASHINGTON, D.C. — Labor Day is a federal holiday that happens every year on the first Monday in September. It recognizes the social and economic accomplishments of American workers. As a national holiday, it is a day of rest and celebration, hence many services and institutions will be closed or have different hours.
Government and Money Services
Most government services will be closed because it is a federal holiday. This includes:
The federal, state, and local government offices include the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and public libraries.
The courts and government offices will be closed.
Banks will be closed, but consumers will still be able to use ATMs and online banking.
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ are two of the financial markets that will be closed for business.
Mail and Delivery Services
People who are expecting mail or parcels should plan ahead because most delivery services will be closed.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) won’t be picking up or delivering mail, and all post offices will be closed.
UPS will not be picking up or delivering packages. UPS Express Critical, on the other hand, will continue to work as usual.
FedEx will close most of its services, however FedEx Custom Critical will stay available and FedEx Office facilities will have different hours.
Stores that sell groceries and other things
Labor Day is a great time for many Americans to shop and take advantage of holiday bargains. Most big stores will be open, but there are a few that won’t be.
Walmart and Target, two big stores, will be open and should be open throughout their regular hours.
Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Best Buy will also be open. They often have special Christmas specials on home renovation and electronics that bring in customers.
Most grocery stores will stay open. Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Whole Foods (but customers should check local hours), Pick ‘n Save, Harris Teeter, and Fred Meyer are all part of this.
Aldi will be open, although the hours may be limited depending on where you are.
Costco is one of the few big stores that will be closed on Labor Day. This is a long-standing company custom that gives staff a day off for the holiday.
Pharmacies: Many Walgreens and CVS stores will be open, but their pharmacy hours may change, and some stores may not be open at all. It is best to contact ahead to make sure.
