Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], March 29: Prithviraj Sukumaran’s directorial ‘L2: Empuraan’, starring Mohanlal, is making waves at the box office, becoming the first Malayalam film to cross ₹80 crore worldwide on its opening. However, the film has also sparked controversy, drawing criticism from right-wing supporters over its alleged depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots.
BJP Leaders Respond to the Controversy
BJP leader V Muraleedharan addressed the media, stating that the party has already clarified its stand on the issue and that the state BJP president’s remarks are final.
“The party has already clarified its stand, and the State President has made the BJP’s position very clear. As a film lover, everyone can have their own opinion. I haven’t seen the film yet, but the State President’s words are final,” Muraleedharan said.
Earlier, BJP Kerala President Rajeev Chandrasekhar shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) extending his best wishes to the film’s team, including Mohanlal.

BJYM Leader Calls for Investigation into Prithviraj’s ‘Foreign Connections’
Adding to the controversy, BJYM (Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha) State General Secretary K Ganesh accused Prithviraj Sukumaran of promoting an “anti-national narrative” through his films.
In a Facebook post, he wrote:
“Director and actor Prithviraj’s foreign connections should be investigated. After ‘Aadujeevitham,’ his movies have consistently followed an anti-national pattern—from ‘Kuruthi’ to ‘Jana Gana Mana’ and now ‘Empuraan.’ These films repeatedly whitewash extremist ideologies.”
He further alleged that Prithviraj’s stay in Jordan during the filming of ‘Aadujeevitham’ should be probed.
“During the shooting of ‘Aadujeevitham,’ he was stranded in Jordan. It is important to investigate whom he was in contact with during his time there,” Ganesh added.
Box Office Success Amid Controversy
Despite the political backlash, ‘L2: Empuraan’ has enjoyed a record-breaking box office run since its release on March 27. The film is the second installment of the ‘Lucifer’ franchise, which was Prithviraj’s directorial debut in 2019.
