NEW YORK: Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has officially pulled out of the U.S. Open. This is the third year in a row that he will miss the last Grand Slam tournament of the year. The withdrawal, which was announced on Thursday, shows that he is still having trouble with ailments that have hurt his career in recent seasons.
Kyrgios has been off the circuit for a long time after his great 2022 season, when he made it to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open and the final of Wimbledon, where he was rated as high as No. 13 in the world. He missed much of the 2023 and 2024 seasons because of a number of injuries, including surgery on his wrist and knee.
He tried to make a comeback in 2025, but ongoing health problems have made it hard for him to do so. He has only played five singles matches on the ATP Tour this year, and his last encounter was a loss in Miami in March. This year, he only played in one Grand Slam event, the Australian Open, where he lost in the first round.
Because Kyrgios dropped out of the U.S. Open, a “lucky loser” will take his place in the main draw. This is a player who lost in the last round of the tournament’s qualifying rounds but gets to participate because a main-draw player dropped out.
Fans were hopeful that the 30-year-old would be ready to compete at Flushing Meadows, but his long-term recovery process is still proving to be difficult. It wasn’t made clear why he dropped out, but it’s thought to be because of his continuous problems with ailments to his foot, knee, and wrist.
This weekend, the men’s singles event at the U.S. Open will start.
