Kolkata Law Student Gangrape Case Triggers Political Firestorm Between BJP And TMC

Kolkata: The alleged gangrape of a law student at South Calcutta Law College has sparked a major political row between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), with sharp accusations and counterattacks flying across social media and press briefings.

The accused, Monojit Mishra, a former TMC youth wing president, was arrested alongside two others after the survivor filed a complaint. The incident reportedly occurred in the college premises, near the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) union room.

BJP Launches Offensive

Amit Malviya, BJP West Bengal co-incharge, condemned the assault, calling it

“another shameful chapter in Bengal’s collapsing law and order under TMC rule.”

He further alleged,

“The gangrape took place right outside the union room of the TMC students’ wing.”

Raising serious questions about the incident, Malviya asked,

“Why was a student summoned to the TMCP union area? How was a former student roaming freely on campus? Where was the college administration when the survivor cried for help?”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:

“If reports are to be believed, the girl was taken to a bathroom first, then dragged into a room after screaming. If that’s the case, was everyone in the building deaf, blind, or just afraid to speak against TMCP? TMC MUST ANSWER.”

He accused the ruling party of treating campuses like “crime zones” and alleged institutional protection for rapists.

“TMC’s institutional protection for rapists will be crushed. BJP stands with Bengal’s women — and we will fight until this ends,” he added.

Malviya also alleged that Monojit Mishra had close ties with senior TMC leaders, including MP Abhishek Banerjee, Kajari Banerjee, and Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, sharing purported photos of Mishra with them.

“This is not just a crime. This is a cover-up of the highest order. TMC is a party of rapists and protector of rapists,” he stated.

In another post, Malviya said:

“For the TMC, rape is not a crime – it’s a political tool.”
Calling Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee “the enabler, the evil,” he added,
“If you want the women in your homes safe — throw Mamata Banerjee out.”

TMC Retaliates, Brings Up BJP’s Own Scandals

Responding sharply, TMC spokesperson Jay Prakash criticised BJP for politicising a heinous crime.
He said it was unfortunate that the Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari used the incident for political gain after Adhikari said,

“Anything can happen in this state… The CM would now say it is a small incident and offer money to the victim. She must resign.”

The TMC, while condemning the gangrape, took aim at the central government, accusing it of inaction on the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill.

“It has not lifted a finger to get it implemented,” the party stated.

To counter the BJP’s attacks, TMC brought up the Prajwal Revanna rape case from Karnataka, noting JD(S) is a BJP ally.

“He confined women, raped them, filmed the acts, and later threatened them. And who is he sharing the stage with? None other than @narendramodi!” the party posted on X.

It also referenced the IIT-BHU rape case, stating:

“At least two of the accused were members of the BJP Varanasi IT Cell; shared pictures with the likes of @narendramodi, @amitmalviya, and many others!”

What Next?

The BJP has vowed to raise the issue on every forum until justice is delivered, while the TMC has insisted on a comprehensive legislative solution through the Aparajita Bill. Meanwhile, public outrage continues to grow, as both political camps blame each other amid the search for justice for the survivor.
