Kolkata, July 2 : In a landmark verdict, the 1st Court of the Additional District Judge (ADJ), Sealdah, on Tuesday sentenced Sanjay Sen alias Bappa to death for the brutal double murder and robbery committed in 2015 at Chitpur, Kolkata. The sentence was pronounced by Judge Anirban Das following the convict’s earlier conviction under Sections 302 (murder) and 394 (robbery causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.
The case dates back to July 16, 2015, when Chitpur police discovered the blood-soaked bodies of Pran Gobinda Das (77) and his wife Renuka Das (77) inside their locked flat at Indralok Housing Estate. Their murders sent shockwaves through the locality, particularly given the brutality involved and the theft of a substantial amount of gold ornaments.
Following an intensive investigation led by SI Jagabandhu Garai of the Homicide Squad, Detective Department, Sanjay Sen was arrested. His confession under Section 27 of the Indian Evidence Act led to the recovery of stolen gold ornaments, ₹1.87 lakh in cash, and the weapon of offence — an iron pipe, along with blood-stained clothes, recovered from a pond near his residence.
The post-mortem reports from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital confirmed that the deaths were caused by ante-mortem injuries and were homicidal in nature. The case was registered on the basis of a complaint by Dr. Partha Sen, the victims’ nephew.
After a detailed trial involving the testimony of 30 witnesses, the court on July 1, 2025, found Sanjay Sen guilty. On July 2, the court delivered the final verdict, stating that the convict shall be “hanged from the neck until dead” for his heinous crimes.
This verdict marks a significant moment in Kolkata’s criminal justice history, reinforcing a strong message against violent crimes driven by greed.
