KL Rahul’s Classy Century Puts India In Command At Headingley In 1st Test Vs England

Leeds, June 24 — KL Rahul roared back to form in sensational fashion, notching up his ninth Test century to put India in a commanding position against England on Day 4 of the first Test at Headingley.

The stylish right-hander brought up his hundred in the 62nd over, reaching the milestone in 202 balls with a signature cover drive off Shoaib Bashir. This was Rahul’s first Test ton in 18 months, the last one coming against South Africa in Centurion in December 2023.

Rahul, who had fallen for 42 in the first innings due to a loose shot outside off-stump, made no such errors this time. Calm, composed, and clinical — the 33-year-old proved why he remains one of India’s most technically assured Test batters.

“High-class stuff from a high-class player. What an absolute joy to watch,” said former England captain Nasser Hussain on commentary.
“Just a beautiful cover drive, that’s how he got to a wonderful hundred,” echoed Michael Atherton.

🔹 Third Test Century in England

Rahul’s innings was also significant in a historical context — this was his third Test hundred on English soil, making him the only Indian opening batter to achieve the feat. He now averages close to 40 in England, solidifying his credentials as a dependable performer in tough overseas conditions.

🔹 India’s Stronghold Grows

Rahul, along with Rishabh Pant, who played an aggressive hand after skipper Shubman Gill was dismissed early on Day 4, took India’s lead past 200 runs. The duo blunted England’s bowling attack in the first session and then picked up pace post-lunch.

England missed a vital opportunity when Harry Brook dropped Rahul in the slips — a moment that proved costly as Rahul made the most of the reprieve.

The Headingley pitch has held up well, and with India’s lead expanding rapidly, the visitors are eyeing a target of 400+ to put the pressure squarely back on England.

🔹 Rahul’s Return to the Top Order

KL Rahul’s resurgence as an opener has been a timely one. He resumed opening duties during the Perth Test vs Australia earlier this year in Rohit Sharma’s absence. With Rohit having since retired from Test cricket, Rahul has once again cemented his place at the top of the order.

🔹 Match Situation

  • India lead by 207 runs at Tea on Day 4.
  • Rahul (100) and Pant (68)** are unbeaten at the crease.
  • England bowlers have struggled to find breakthroughs after an early success.

India will look to bat deep into Day 4, set a mammoth target, and unleash their bowlers on a fatigued English side — all thanks to KL Rahul’s patient yet authoritative century that may well define this match.
