Los Angeles [US], January 13: Reality TV star Kim Kardashian voiced her support for firefighters battling the ongoing wildfires in California, expressing gratitude for their bravery while also demanding a pay raise for incarcerated firefighters.
Taking to Instagram Stories on Sunday, Kim highlighted the longstanding issue of low pay for incarcerated firefighters, who have earned just $1 per hour since 1984. She noted that their pay has not kept up with inflation, and while a recent proposal to raise it to $5 an hour was reportedly “shot down,” she argued that it still falls short of adequately compensating those who risk their lives.
Kardashian called on California Governor Gavin Newsom to increase the pay to a level that truly honors the sacrifices these individuals make to protect lives and homes. She also extended her thanks to firefighters from the CAL FIRE Ventura Training Center for saving her community from the recent blaze.
“These are all formerly incarcerated firefighters who are now continuing to serve their communities,” Kardashian said, praising the impact of legislation passed by the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, which enables former inmates to have their records expunged in exchange for fire service and pursue higher-paying jobs within fire departments.
Kardashian’s call for support follows similar efforts from other celebrities who have been helping those affected by the devastating fires in Los Angeles.
