Washington [US], June 15: Kim Cattrall, best known for her bold and beloved portrayal of Samantha Jones in HBO’s Sex and the City, recently revealed that she turned down the role four times before finally accepting it — all due to what she called “self-inflicted ageism.”
In an interview reported by Deadline, Cattrall explained that at the age of 41, she initially doubted whether she could convincingly play such a sexually confident and empowered character. “Well, that changed. 40 became sexy. It became, ‘Man, let’s have more of that,'” she shared, reflecting on how her mindset evolved.
Samantha Jones would go on to become one of television’s most iconic characters — known for her fearless approach to love, life, and relationships. “She wasn’t a nymphomaniac, well, some people might have thought she was,” Cattrall joked. “But she was just enjoying the main course. Everyone else was nibbling on the appetizers.”
Despite the character’s uninhibited nature, Cattrall says she’s quite different from Samantha in real life, describing herself as a “serial monogamist.” Still, she expressed deep pride and affection for the role that defined much of her career. “I created a fantastic character that I loved, and I put a lot of love in it. And if I’m remembered only for that, then that’s really OK.”
Sex and the City, which aired from 1998 to 2004, left a lasting cultural impact and inspired multiple spin-offs, including The Carrie Diaries and And Just Like That…, which premiered on HBO Max in 2021. While Cattrall chose not to return as a regular cast member in the reboot, she made a surprise cameo in the season 2 finale — a moment that thrilled longtime fans of the show.
