Kharge Slams Modi Government Over Pahalgam Attack, Alleges Security Negligence and Political Prioritisation

New Delhi [India], May 20: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has launched a sharp attack on the Modi government, alleging serious security lapses following the Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in 26 deaths. Kharge claimed the government ignored intelligence warnings and failed to ensure the safety of tourists in the region.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Kharge said,

“Twenty-six people were killed in Pahalgam because the Modi government did not provide security there. Despite knowing about the threat, they failed to deploy police or security forces. The Prime Minister didn’t even speak about the attack.”

Kharge further alleged that intelligence agencies had informed the Prime Minister about potential threats in Kashmir, prompting him to cancel his own trip.

“Modi didn’t go to Kashmir because his security advised against it. If the government knew the situation was dangerous, why didn’t they inform the tourists? Why wasn’t a public warning issued? Had they done so, 26 innocent lives could have been saved,” he said.

In a scathing remark, Kharge accused the government of prioritising the Prime Minister’s security over that of ordinary citizens.

“Modi’s protection was ensured, but not that of the people. It’s clear where this government’s priorities lie,” he said, while asserting that Pakistan is weak and only acts with China’s support.

Political Retaliation

Kharge also dismissed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and CBI notices issued to Congress leaders, stating that such tactics would not weaken the party.

“Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi gave their lives for the country. No matter how many notices you send, the Congress will not be weakened,” he said defiantly.

BJP-Congress Clash Over Pakistan Allegations

Meanwhile, a parallel controversy erupted after BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya posted an edited image of Rahul Gandhi, comparing him to Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir and implying he may be awarded the Nishan-e-Pakistan, Pakistan’s highest civilian honour.

Responding to this, Congress leader Pawan Khera lashed out at the BJP, calling the post “propaganda” and referring to historical figures who had closer ties with Pakistan.

“Morarji Desai was the only Indian leader awarded the Nishan-e-Pakistan—for leaking RAW secrets. Lal Krishna Advani called Jinnah secular. And someone went uninvited to eat biryani with Nawaz Sharif. Who really deserves that award?” Khera said.

Khera also renewed criticism of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, accusing him of informing Pakistan ahead of India’s strikes on terrorist camps.

“He said we informed Pakistan before attacking terror hideouts. His ties with the US are strong—let’s see which country gives him an award now,” he added sarcastically.

Conclusion

The remarks have further escalated the political war of words in the run-up to the elections, with the Congress intensifying its critique of national security and foreign policy decisions under the Modi government.
