Washington [US]: In a moving tribute to his long-time friend and Valkyr co-star, Kenneth Branagh praised Hollywood icon Tom Cruise as an “underestimated” actor, celebrating his range and emotional depth often overshadowed by his action-hero image.
Cruise is set to be honoured with the British Film Institute’s (BFI) highest accolade — the BFI Fellowship — recognizing his extensive and influential contributions to cinema, particularly his decades of work in the United Kingdom.
In an interview with Deadline, Branagh reflected on Cruise’s career, stating, “He’s an underestimated actor, for whom a golden age of performance beckons.” He lauded Cruise’s ability to blend cinematic spectacle with sincere emotional resonance, pointing to his work in blockbuster hits like Mission: Impossible and Top Gun.
While Cruise’s adrenaline-fueled roles have made him a global superstar, Branagh emphasized that audiences often overlook the depth he brings to each character. “His range is remarkable, and I believe there is more to come,” Branagh said.
Offering a personal glimpse into Cruise’s off-screen life, Branagh shared that the actor remains grounded despite his fame. “He enjoys quiet evenings in traditional British pubs, where he’s respected by locals but doesn’t draw unnecessary attention,” Branagh revealed. “He finds a quiet corner, enjoys the atmosphere, and is always gracious when he gets spotted.”
In celebration of the BFI Fellowship, a month-long retrospective of Cruise’s films will be held, honouring his over four decades of cinematic achievements.
Reacting to the news, Cruise expressed heartfelt gratitude: “I’m truly honoured. I’ve been making films in the UK for over 40 years and have no plans to stop.”
