Katy Perry Shares Thoughts On Carrie Underwood Joining ‘American Idol’ As Judge

Washington [US], January 31: Singer Katy Perry recently shared her thoughts on Carrie Underwood replacing her as a judge on American Idol, praising Underwood’s experience and unique insight into the competition. Perry expressed admiration for Underwood’s connection to the show, saying, “She was born on that show,” and added, “I think she knows how to steer it.”

Perry’s comments come six months after Underwood’s announcement as a new judge alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Perry had earlier revealed her departure from the judging panel, stating, “I love the show so much, but I want to go see the world and maybe bring new music.”

Perry praised Underwood for bringing a fresh perspective to the show, noting that as a former contestant, Underwood understands what it’s like to be in the contestants’ shoes. “She actually truly knows … what it feels like to be in the contestants’ shoes,” Perry explained. “We could only metaphorically feel that as judges.”

Underwood, who won American Idol in its fourth season, is widely recognized as the most successful winner in the show’s history, having earned eight Grammy Awards and 25 accolades from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. She has released eight albums, including a greatest hits collection, with four of those albums reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

In February, Perry announced that season 22 of American Idol would be her last, as she wanted to focus on her music. She had been part of the judging panel since the show’s ABC revival in 2018, alongside Richie and Bryan.

Underwood, returning to American Idol for season 25, shared in August that the show “feels like home” to her. Reflecting on her judging approach, Underwood stated, “I can’t lie. I just can’t,” and added that she aims to be both honest and constructive in her feedback to contestants.

American Idol, created by Simon Fuller, originally aired on Fox for 15 seasons before being revived by ABC in 2018. The 23rd season is set to premiere in early 2025, with live virtual auditions beginning in August.
