Kashmir Observes Complete Shutdown To Condemn Pahalgam Terror Attack: “This Is The Death Of Humanity,” Say Locals

In the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed multiple innocent lives, the entire Kashmir Valley observed a complete shutdown on Wednesday, in a united show of solidarity with the victims’ families and condemnation of the violence.

The shutdown was called by various political parties, religious leaders, traders’ unions, and social groups, who described the attack as a heinous act against humanity. The Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Association (KTMA) announced its participation in the bandh, urging people to come together and reject terrorism in all its forms.

“Islam doesn’t allow such things where people get killed… This is the death of humanity,” said Bashir Ahmad Kongposh, General Secretary of KTMA, speaking to media.
“We had a meeting and unanimously decided on a complete shutdown. We condemn this strongly and want these acts kept far from our region,” he added.

Political Unity in Grief and Protest

Several major political parties in Jammu and Kashmir, including the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, extended full support to the shutdown.

In a statement on X, the JKNC said:
“On the instruction of the Party President, JKNC joins the collective call for a bandh in strong condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack. We appeal to the people of J&K to ensure the hartal is a complete success.”

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti also backed the shutdown, calling the attack “an attack on all of us.”
The Jammu-Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) described the violence as “an assault on the very soul of Jammu and Kashmir.”

Local Voices Speak Out: “Our Name Is Being Tarnished”

Amid the valley-wide shutdown, citizens voiced both pain and frustration, urging peace to return to the region.

Ashiq Hussain, a resident of Srinagar, said:
“The attack on tourists is a murder of humanity. Tourism is at its peak, but now this will impact everything. Kashmir’s name is being tarnished.”

Ankit Maheshwari, a tourist from Rajasthan, noted:
“It’s rare to see Kashmir shut down like this, but the locals have been supportive. It’s a sad situation—Kashmir is such a beautiful place.”

In Poonch, traders also held protests and joined the bandh. The deserted streets across the valley, once bustling with tourists, reflected the collective grief and determination to stand against terror.

Ongoing Security Operations

Meanwhile, the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police have intensified search operations in the Baisran area of Pahalgam in pursuit of the attackers. The investigation continues amid heightened security and widespread public outrage.

This unified response — from citizens, politicians, and business leaders alike — sends a strong message: that Kashmir stands united against terrorism, and that the memory of the victims will not fade without justice.
