Koppal (Karnataka) [India]: Following the shocking Hampi rape and murder incident, Karnataka Police have intensified security measures in the region, conducting raids and increased patrolling in key tourist zones.
Ram L Arasiddi, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Koppal, led a series of raids at homestays and resorts in Basapura, Anegundi, and Sanapur areas to verify documents and improve vigilance.
Heightened Security Measures
The police have enhanced their presence in the area, conducting frequent checks at tourist accommodations, including night inspections.
SP Arasiddi said,
“As a matter of seriousness, we have increased patrolling in these areas and are inspecting resorts at night as well. We have been using NDPS kits for inspections and have booked ten cases in the last three months. We will continue surprise visits, and if any contraband or violations are found, cases will be registered.”
Third Accused Arrested
Karnataka Police recently apprehended the third accused in the Hampi rape case. Identified as Saranabasava (27), a carpenter by profession, the accused was arrested in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and has since been brought back to Karnataka for legal proceedings.
Karnataka Women’s Commission Demands Strict Action
The Karnataka State Commission for Women has written to SP Ram Arasiddi, urging swift and strong legal action in the case. The commission emphasized the need to prevent such incidents and ensure enhanced security at popular tourist destinations.
The letter stated:
“The case of the gangrape of two persons, including a foreign woman, near Tungabhadra left bank canal, Sanapura lake, and Junglee Road near Hampi on March 6 is shocking for the state and the country. The Karnataka State Women’s Commission has taken this matter very seriously.”
The commission further demanded that the maximum punishment be awarded to the accused and called for improved security to protect tourists, especially women.
Incident Overview
On March 6, two women, including an Israeli national, were allegedly raped by three men near the Hampi heritage site in Karnataka’s Vijayanagara district. Tragically, a male tourist accompanying them was later found dead, Koppal police confirmed.
